October 17, 2014: Manhattan Transfer Singer And Founder Tim Hauser Passes Away

Tim Hauser died on October 16, 2014 at age 72 in a hospital in Sayre, PA after previously suffering a heart attack. He was the founder of the Manhattan Transfer, a jazz-pop vocal group first formed in 1969 and re-formed in 1972, and he remained with the group throughout most of the rest of his life.

He was born in Troy, NY and raised on the Jersey Shore. At age 15, he formed a doo-wop group known as The Criterions. After graduating from Villanova University in 1963, he served in the United States Air Force and the New Jersey Air National Guard before beginning a career in marketing in 1965.

In 1969, Hauser co-founded the first incarnation of the Manhattan Transfer, a mostly country/R&B group which recorded one album, "Jukin'," before disbanding in the early 1970s. In 1972, he re-formed the Manhattan Transfer with an entirely new lineup and different musical style. The Manhattan Transfer debuted on the pop charts in 1975 with "Operator" and had a string of hits through 1985 that included "Twilight Zone" (1980), "Trickle Trickle" (1980), and the group's best known song, "Boy From New York City" (1981). The Manhattan Transfer's many awards and accolades include ten Grammys, and the group has continued recording, performing, and touring over the years.

Hauser is survived by his wife, Barb, a son, and a daughter.
