July 16, 2015: David-Troy Somerville Of The Diamonds Passes Away

Famed singer David-Troy Somerville died of cancer on July 14, 2015 at age 81 in Santa Barbara, CA. He was the lead singer and a co-founder of The Diamonds, one of the most popular groups of the 1950s and early 1960s.

Born in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Somerville began his music career at 19 as a radio operator at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation while studying voice at the University of Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music. In 1953, he met by chance a then-unnamed quartet (Stan Fisher, Ted Kowalski, Phil Levitt, and Bill Reed) and became their vocal coach. When Fisher left the quartet to go to college, Somerville became the lead singer, and the group became known as The Diamonds. In 1956, The Diamonds made their debut on the charts with "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" which was followed by a long string of hits through 1961 that also included "The Stroll" (1957) and the doo-wop classic, "Little Darlin'" (1957).

In 1961, Somerville left The Diamonds to go solo, recording under the name, David Troy. During the early 1960s, he also studied acting and made many TV appearances. In 1967, he joined The Four Preps and, with the group's lead singer, Bruce Belland, left the group in 1969 to form the folk-comedy duo, Belland & Somerville. They were regulars on "The Tim Conway Show," and they also wrote a number of songs for other artists.

Somerville's many honors included being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, the Doo Wop Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Doo Wop Hall of Fame of America, and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
