October 24, 2016: Bobby Vee Passes Away

Famed pop singer and 1960s teen idol Bobby Vee died on October 24, 2016 at age 73 from complications of Alzheimer's in a Rogers, MN hospice care facility. He had a long string of hits from 1959-1970 that included "Rubber Ball" (1961), "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" (1963), "Come Back When You Grow Up" (1967), and his signature song, the chart-topping "Take Good Care Of My Baby" (1961).

Born Robert Velline in Fargo, ND, he began his music career at age 15 as a stand-in for his idol, Buddy Holly, after the 1959 plane crash that also took the lives of Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. He debuted on the charts with "Suzie Baby" (1959), a song he wrote that was inspired by Bubby Holly's "Peggy Sue." Vee's fame took off shortly thereafter with "Devil Or Angel" (1960).

A popular teen idol, Vee had also appeared in a number of movies from the early-mid 1960s, including "Swingin' Along," "Play It Cool," "Just For Fun," and "C'mon, Let's Live A Little." He was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2011.

Early in Vee's career, Bob Dylan had briefly played in his band, The Shadows, and he has fond memories of the singer. In a 2013 concert, Dylan spoke of Vee, who was in the audience, as being the most beautiful person I've ever been on the stage with, and performed a cover of his first hit, "Suzie Baby."
