ABOUT
George Harrison (February 25, 1943 - November 29, 2001) was a highly acclaimed and veteran English singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who first became famous internationally during the early 1960s as the lead guitarist of The Beatles. As a solo artist, he has a long string of mostly-self-penned hits that includes "My Sweet Lord" (1970), "Give Me Love - (Give Me Peace On Earth)" (1973), and "Got My Mind Set On You" (1988), which all topped the charts.
Born in Liverpool, England as the youngest of four children in a working-class family, he began playing guitar while in secondary school and in 1958 joined The Quarrymen, a band formed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney that later evolved into The Beatles. Harrison had his earliest songwriting credit with the band in 1963 with "Don't Bother Me," and he went on to contribute to The Beatles' discography such classics as "Taxman" (1966), "Within You Without You" (1967), "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (1968), "Something" (1969), and "Here Comes The Sun" (1969).
After The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Harrison went on to a successful solo career highlighted by his landmark album, "All Things Must Pass" (1970), which spawned the hit single, "My Sweet Lord." He was also known for his interest in Indian music and spirituality, which influenced his work and helped broaden the scope of pop music. In 1988, he co-founded Traveling Wilburys (of "Handle With Care" fame), an English-American supergroup also consisting of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison.
George Harrison received numerous honors and accolades throughout his career that include being one of very few artists to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a member of The Beatles and again as a solo artist. He also won several Grammys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and was recognized for his contributions to music with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
