Nat Kendrick & The Swans is a pseudonym for James Brown's backup band, The JB's, who became famous under that name during the early 1960s. They are best known for the catchy R&B dance hit instrumental, "(Do The) Mashed Potatoes (Part 1)" (1960), an R&B Top 10 smash which later also became a hit for Steve Alaimo.
