Burl Ives - Songs

ABOUT

Burl Ives (June 14, 1909 - April 14, 1995) was a highly acclaimed and veteran singer and actor with a signature deep, soothing voice who became famous during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Best known for "A Little Bitty Tear" (1961), which topped the Adult Contemporary chart, reached #2 on the Country charts, and made the Pop/Rock Top 10, other hits include "Funny Way Of Laughin'" (1962), and "Call Me Mr. In-Between" (1962).

Born Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives in Hunt City, Illinois, he began as a traveling folk singer and guitarist performing traditional songs across the U.S. and by the early 1940s, had launched his own radio show, "The Wayfaring Stranger." He later transitioned into acting, appearing in such movies as "So Dear To My Heart" (1948), "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" (1958), and "The Big Country" (1958), the latter of which won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Ives is fondly remembered for his role as Sam the Snowman in the 1964 animated holiday TV special, "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer." His contributions to this show's soundtrack include the perennial holiday classics, "A Holly Jolly Christmas" and "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer," both of which have continued to chart annually on the Billboard holiday charts to well into the 21st century.
