The Independents - Songs

ABOUT

The Independents were a male-female R&B vocal group with smooth, soulful harmonies that became famous during the early 1970s. Best known for the lovelorn ballad, "Leaving Me" (1973), which topped the R&B charts, made the Pop/Rock Top 40, and became a million-seller, other big hits include "Just As Long As You Need Me, Part I" (1972), "Baby I've Been Missing You" (1973), and "Let This Be A Lesson To You" (1974), which all made the R&B Top 10 and also became Pop/Rock crossover favorites.

Formed in 1971 in Chicago, Illinois, the lineup consisted of Helen Curry, Charles "Chuck" Jackson, Maurice Jackson (no relation to Chuck Jackson), and Eric Thomas. Chuck Jackson and Marvin Jerome Yancy (May 31, 1950 - March 22, 1985) produced for The Independents and co-wrote most of the group's songs. After The Independents disbanded in 1975, Jackson went on to record solo before re-teaming with Yancy to produce for such top artists as Yancy's then-wife, Natalie Cole. Chuck Jackson is the half-brother of the late Reverend Jesse Jackson and is not related to the same-named singer of "Any Day Now" fame. Many years later, Maurice Jackson reformed The Independents in 2019 with all new members.
