Janis Ian - Songs

ABOUT

Janis Ian (b. 1951) is a highly acclaimed and veteran folk/soft rock singer-songwriter known for her poignant lyrics and social commentary who became famous beginning in the late 1960s. She is best known for the then-controversial "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" (1967) and the introspective "At Seventeen" (1975), the latter of which topped the Adult Contemporary chart, made the Pop/Rock Top 5, and earned Ian her first Grammy.

Born Janis Eddy Fink in Farmingdale, New Jersey, she began taking piano lessons at age two and launched her music career while still in her early teens, writing her first song at age 12 and achieving national fame at 14 with the era-defining "Society's Child," a solemn ballad about an interracial teenage romance torn apart by societal pressures. This era-defining classic won high praise from famed conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein who arranged for her to perform this song on "Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution," a 1967 CBS TV documentary hosted by Bernstein.

Over the years, Janis Ian has released numerous albums, won two Grammy Awards, and formed her own record label, Rude Girl Records. In addition to her long and fruitful music career, she is also a published author and has written science fiction stories, showcasing her diverse talents and commitment to social justice.
