ABOUT
Jethro Tull is a highly acclaimed and veteran English progressive rock band that became famous beginning in the early 1970s with their unique blend of hard rock, folk, and classical music before branching out stylistically in later years. They are best known for the reflective "Living In The Past" (1972), written in quintuple (5/4) time, and the whimsical and energetic "Bungle In The Jungle" (1974), which both made the U.S. Pop/Rock Top 20. Other signature songs include the epic and disturbing "Aqualung" (1971), the title track from the band's platinum-certified album that spawned the hits, "Hymn 43" (1971) and "Locomotive Breath" (1976).
Formed in 1967 in Blackpool, Lancashire by Ian Anderson, the band's longtime lead singer, flutist, and main songwriter, other longtime members included lead guitarist Martin Barre who joined Jethro Tull in 1968 and remained with the band through its initial dissolution in 2011. The classic 1970s lineup also included, at various times, Barriemore Barlow (drums, percussion), Clive Bunker (drums, percussion), Glenn Cornick (bass), John Evan (keyboards, synthesizers, piano, backing vocals), John Glascock (bass, backing vocals), Jeffrey Hammond (bass, vocals), and Dee Palmer (keyboards, synthesizers, saxophone, clarinet), with numerous personnel changes and additions over the years.
After Jethro Tull debuted in 1968 in the U.K. with the mostly blues rock/jazz fusion album, "This Was," they topped the U.K. album charts the following year with "Stand Up" (1969). Their fame took off internationally in 1971 with "Aqualung," their first foray into progressive rock with songs lyrics that address such weighty topics as religion, spirituality, and the plight of the homeless. This landmark album was followed soon after by "Thick As A Brick" (1972) and "A Passion Play" (1973), which both topped the U.S. Billboard 200; other top-ranking albums include "Living In The Past" (1972), "War Child" (1974), "Minstrel In The Gallery" (1975), and "Songs From The Wood" (1977). Throughout their career, they released dozens of albums, many of which went gold or platinum, and in 1989, they won a Grammy for "Crest Of A Knave" (1987). Jethro Tull has continued to perform and record to the present day, with Ian Anderson as the only remaining original member.
