ABOUT
Joe Harnell (August 2, 1924 - July 14, 2005) was a highly acclaimed composer, arranger, and pianist who became famous as a recording artist during the early 1960s. He is best known for his bossa nova-styled instrumental arrangement of "Fly Me To The Moon - Bossa Nova" (1963), a Bart Howard-penned jazz standard originally titled "In Other Words." Harnell's version became a Pop/Rock Top 20 hit and won him a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
Born Joseph Hittelman in the Bronx, New York, he began playing piano at age six and by 14, was performing in jazz and klezmer ensembles led by his father, a vaudeville performer. He enrolled at the University of Miami on a music scholarship and later studied composition under Nadia Boulanger, William Walton, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein. While enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces, he played with Glenn Miller's Army Air Forces Band, and over his long career, also worked with Judy Garland, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, and other top acts. His many career highlights also included serving as the house pianist on "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" (1956-1963) and as the musical director for "The Mike Douglas Show" (1967-1973).
