ABOUT
Luther Ingram (November 30, 1937 - March 19, 2007) was an R&B/soul singer-songwriter with a great deal of crossover appeal who became famous during the early 1970s. He is best known for the yearning "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right" (1972), a ballad about an adulterous love affair that topped the R&B charts, made the Pop/Rock Top 5, and became a million-seller.
Born Luther Thomas Ingram in Jackson, Tennessee and raised in Alton, Illinois, he began in the 1950s as lead singer of the Alton Crusaders, a gospel group that also included his brothers Archie and Richard. Ingram launched his solo career in the mid 1960s and debuted on the R&B charts in 1969 with "Pity For The Lonely." In addition to "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right," his long string of hits on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts also includes "My Honey And Me" (1970), "Ain't That Loving You (For More Reasons Than One)" (1970), "I'll Be Your Shelter (In Time Of Storm)" (1972), and "Always" (1973). His many songwriting credits for other artists include the anthemic "Respect Yourself," a big hit for The Staple Singers co-written with Mack Rice. Luther Ingram continued to perform and record actively over the years through the mid 1990s.
