Toni Fisher (December 4, 1924 - January 11, 1999), also billed on her recordings as Miss Toni Fisher, was a traditional pop singer with tough, forceful vocals who became famous during the late 1950s and early 1960s. She is best known for the haunting "The Big Hurt" (1959) and the upbeat and quirky "West Of The Wall" (1962), the latter song about the sadness of lovers separated by the 1961 construction of the Berlin Wall. Her voice was so powerful that she was reportedly billed as "Miss Toni Fisher" to make certain that listeners knew she was not a man.

Born in Los Angeles, Fisher began performing in local night clubs during the 1950s, and her career took off when a demo recording she made of Julie London's "Cry Me A River" caught the attention of singer, songwriter, and producer Wayne Shanklin who founded Signet Records in 1959. Her rendition of the Shanklin-penned "The Big Hurt," the first hit record to employ a whooshing, swirling sound produced by flanging, became one of that label's earliest successes, along with her recording of "West Of The Wall," which he also wrote.
