ABOUT
Wanda Jackson (b. 1937) is a highly acclaimed and pioneering country/rockabilly singer and songwriter with powerful, growling vocals and a forceful delivery who became famous beginning in the mid 1950s. She is best known for the electrifying "Let's Have A Party" (1960), as well as other such rockabilly classics as "I Gotta Know" (1956), "Mean Mean Man" (1958) and "Fujiyama Mama" (1958), the latter of which topped the charts in Japan. Jackson also shows a softer side on such classic country ballads as "Right Or Wrong" (1961), "In The Middle Of A Heartache" (1961), "Tears Will Be The Chaser For Your Wine" (1966), and "Fancy Satin Pillows" (1970).
Born Wanda LaVonne Jackson in Maud, Oklahoma, she began in the early 1950s while still in high school performing on her own radio show in Oklahoma City. In 1954, she was discovered by country singer Hank Thompson and debuted on the Country charts that year with the defiant "You Can't Have My Love," the first in a long string of hits through 1974, many of which crossed over to the Pop/Rock charts. In 1955, after graduating from high school, she began touring and performed alongside Elvis Presley, who encouraged her to record rockabilly and rock & roll. Throughout her long career, she successfully transitioned between rockabilly, country, and gospel music, returning to rockabilly/rock & roll in the mid 1980s. She continued to perform and record actively up to her retirement in 2018.
Wanda Jackson was dubbed "The Queen of Rockabilly" due to her being among the first female performers in this genre during the late 1950s. She is also among the first women to have a lifelong career as a country music artist. Her numerous honors and accolades include being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
