During the week of July 18, 2021, it was announced that Joni Mitchell, Bette Midler, and Motown founder Berry Gordy will be among this year's recipients of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. The awards ceremonies will take place December 5 at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. and will be broadcast on CBS during the 2021-2022 television season.
Also that week, a number of veteran bands and artists announced their return to the stage for later this year. Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys will launch a solo tour beginning this August, and The Rolling Stones will resume the North American leg of their "No Filter" tour this September which was postponed last year due to the pandemic. Tony Bennett will give his final performances with Lady Gaga this August at NYC's Radio City Music Hall, and George Clinton of Parliament/Funkadelic announced his "un-retirement" at age 80 with a show planned for this August on Verzuz, a new webcast series launched in 2020.
Live Nation is offering $20 tickets to its shows as part of its promotion, "Return To Live." Participating acts include Alice Cooper, Chicago, Dead & Company, The Doobie Brothers, KISS, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. For more info, visit LiveNation.com.
Also that week, it was announced that "An Odd Little Place: The Digital Works of Jerry Garcia (1992-1995)" will soon be going to auction on YellowHeart. This collection includes over 20 works of art created by the late Grateful Dead co-founder on his Apple computer.
Finally, "Don McLean's American Pie: The Official 50th Anniversary Celebration" is available now as a "bookazine" wherever magazines are sold. This 96-page publication covers the history of this classic song and includes photos of the famed singer-songwriter through the years.
