Allbutforgottenoldies.net Music News Digest: Week Of January 16, 2022

January 23, 2022 by Amy Gold

During the week of January 16, 2022, the Recording Academy announced that the 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremonies, originally set to take place January 31, have been moved to April 3 due to Omicron concerns and will air live on CBS from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. This year's nominees include ABBA (for Record Of The Year), Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga (for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance), and Paul McCartney (for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song).

Also that week, Elton John's long-awaited Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour resumed after a number of delays, and on January 19, he kicked off the North American leg of this trek with a show in New Orleans, LA. His set list included all his classic hits plus his latest worldwide smash, "Cold Heart," which made the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 earlier this month. After completing a series of North American show dates running through April, he will head back to Europe before returning to the U.S. to give a number of sports stadium concerts beginning July 15 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, PA.

David Bowie's entire music catalog is now available for Peloton users, and three newly-mixed songs by the late rock legend as performed by contemporary artists also made their premiere on this exercise equipment platform. The David Bowie Collection can be found under the "Collections" sections in the Peloton App or the Peloton hardware touchscreen, and a free two-month trial of the app is available for non-Peloton members. Also that week, Neil Young's new documentary, "Barn," debuted January 20 on his official YouTube channel and will be streamed exclusively on that platform. Directed by his wife, actress Daryl Hannah, this film covers the making of Neil Young & Crazy Horse's same-named 2021 album during the COVID-19 pandemic in June of last year in a restored 19th-century log barn in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. This movie previously premiered in several select theaters around the time of the album's December 10 release and is available on Blu-ray.

Finally, fans gave a surprise performance for Barry Manilow while he was dining in a New York restaurant with songwriting partner Bruce Sussman. Once the pop legend was spotted at his table, they serenaded a delighted Manilow with their rendition of his signature song, "Copacabana," complete with conga line.
