Allbutforgottenoldies.net Music News Digest: Week Of May 22, 2022

May 29, 2022 by Amy Gold

During the week of May 22, 2022, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band announced their first tour in six years which kicks off next February in the U.S., followed by a leg in Europe and then a second North American leg in August. To date, several show dates have already been scheduled in Europe starting April 28 in Barcelona, Spain, with more to come worldwide.

Also that week, Don McLean pulled out of an NRA-organized concert held in Houston on May 29 in the wake of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX. In light of the recent events in Texas, I have decided it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to perform for the NRA at their convention in Houston this week. I'm sure all the folks planning to attend this event are shocked and sickened by these events as well. After all, we are all Americans. I share the sorrow for this terrible, cruel loss with the rest of the nation.

Frankie Valli and Peter Gabriel are among the announced winners for the upcoming 2022 O2 Silver Clef Awards taking place July 1 and presented by Nordoff Robbins, a music therapy charity in the U.K. Valli will be honored with the Icon Award, and Gabriel will receive the top O2 Silver Clef Award.

Also that week, it was announced that "Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs Of Marc Bolan & T. Rex," a new documentary produced by BMG about the legendary English glam rock band, will make its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. This movie takes an in-depth look at Bolan's music and career up to his untimely death in 1977 at age 29 in an auto accident.

Finally, guitars that belonged to Johnny Cash and Jimi Hendrix fetched big bucks at a Julien's Auctions "Music Icons" sale that took place May 20-22 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. Among the instruments that exchanged hands were a 1956 Martin D-21 model acoustic guitar that Cash played onstage during the late 1950s, which sold for $437,500, and a 1964 Fender Jazzmaster guitar once owned by Hendrix, which went for $384,000.
