ABOUT
The Archies were a late 1960s bubblegum studio group based on the TV cartoon series, "The Archie Show." They are best known for the 1969 smash, "Sugar, Sugar."
Formed in 1968 by famed producer/talent manager Don Kirshner, the lineup consisted of fictional band members Betty Cooper (percussion, vocals), Veronica Lodge (keyboards, vocals), Jughead Jones (drums), Reggie Mantle (bass), and lead singer/guitarist Archie Andrews who was voiced by Ron Dante (also of The Cuff Links and The Detergents). Other singers included, at various times, Andy Kim (later of "Rock Me Gently" fame), Toni Wine, Ellie Greenwich, and Jeff Barry, who co-wrote and produced most of The Archies' songs.
The Archies debuted in 1968 with "Bang-Shang-A-Lang," a Top 40 hit. Their fame took off in the summer of 1969 with the Andy Kim/Jeff Barry-penned "Sugar, Sugar," which topped the charts and soon after went gold. This smash was followed later that year by "Jingle Jangle" (1969), also co-written by Kim and Barry, which made the Top 10. The Archies other hits include "Feelin' So Good (S.k.o.o.b.y.-D.o.o.)" (1968), "Who's Your Baby?" (1970), "Sunshine" (1970), and "Together We Two" (1970).
"Sugar, Sugar," which also topped the charts in the U.K., Belgium, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, and many other countries worldwide, was voted "Song Of The Year" in 1969 by Billboard Magazine.
