Andy Griffith (June 1, 1926 - July 3, 2012) was a highly acclaimed and veteran actor, comedian, TV producer, singer, and writer best known for his roles as Mayberry's Sheriff Andy Taylor and later as criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock. Griffith sang as part of some of his acting roles, most notably in "A Face In The Crowd" and in many episodes of both "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Matlock." As a recording artist, his best known works include "What It Was, Was Football" (1954) and other hit comedy routines, and over his long career, he recorded many gospel and country albums. Among his most successful recording was "I Love To Tell the Story: 25 Timeless Hymns" (1996), which won a Grammy in 1997 and went platinum.
