Erma Franklin (March 13, 1938 - September 7, 2002) was a gospel and soul singer who became famous during the late 1960s. She is best known for the original version of "Piece Of My Heart" (1967), which made the R&B Top 10 and earned her a Grammy nomination. This song later became a big Pop/Rock hit for Big Brother & The Holding Company, with lead vocals by Janis Joplin. The elder sister of soul legend Aretha Franklin, Erma sang with her and their sister Carolyn in church as children and later provided backing vocals on many of her recordings and toured with her.
