George Cates (October 19, 1911 - May 10, 2002) was a highly acclaimed conductor, arranger, songwriter, and record executive who became famous beginning in the early 1950s. His best known songs include the lushly orchestrated Top 5 instrumental smash, "Moonglow And Theme From 'Picnic'" (1956). Cate served as musical director and later conductor for "The Lawrence Welk Show" from 1951-1982.
