The Highwaymen

ABOUT

The Highwaymen were a folk group formed at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT where its members were undergraduates that became famous during the early 1960s. They are best known for their somber and reflective rendition of the 19th Century African-American work song, "Michael" (1961, aka "Michael, Row The Boat Ashore"), which topped both the Adult Contemporary and Pop/Rock charts and became a million-seller. Other big hits include their Top 20 cover of "Cotton Fields" (1961), a song originally written and recorded by Lead Belly in 1940.
