Madeline Bell - Songs

ABOUT

Madeline Bell (b. 1942) is a veteran R&B/soul singer who became famous in the U.S. during the late 1960s. Although American-born, she had her greatest career success in the U.K. where she was a member of the pop group, Blue Mink. As a solo artist, she is best known for her hit remake of Dee Dee Warwick's "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (1968), which later also became a hit for Diana Ross & The Supremes & The Temptations.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, Bell began professionally in 1962 as a member of Alex Bradford's gospel vocal group who toured widely in the U.S. and Europe where they performed in the traveling musical, "Black Nativity." After the show ended, Bell settled in England and became a session singer, and over the years, backed such diverse acts as Donovan, Serge Gainsbourg, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, and Dusty Springfield. In 1967, she signed with Philips Records as a solo artist and released her debut album, "Bell's A Poppin'" (1967).

Madeline Bell made her U.S. debut in 1968 with "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," which became a Top 40 hit on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts. She had one other charting song the following year with "Step Inside Love" (1969).

In 1969, Madeline Bell became a founding member of Roger Coulam's newly-formed Blue Mink (of "Our World" fame), where she remained through 1973. In the late 1970s, she joined the French disco group, Space, serving as lead singer on two albums. In the meantime, she continued her long career as a session vocalist and, by the early 1980s, had also begun singing commercial jingles. Bell has also continued to perform and record solo to the present day.
