Mahalia Jackson (October 26, 1911 - January 27, 1972) was a celebrated and influential gospel singer with powerful contralto vocals who became famous beginning in the 1940s. Best known for the uplifting and anthemic "Move On Up A Little Higher" (1948), a Top 40 Pop hit and million-seller, other major hits include her stirring rendition of the traditional African-American spiritual, "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands" (1958). She was a key figure in the civil rights movement, often performing at events alongside Martin Luther King Jr. Her numerous honors include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and being inducted into the Rock & Roll, Gospel, and R&B Halls of Fame.
