Merv Griffin (July 6, 1925 - August 12, 2007, b. Mervyn Edward Griffin Jr.) was a popular TV talk show host and media mogul who began in the 1940s as a radio and big band singer, later appearing in movies and on Broadway. From 1942-1952, he served as a featured singer with Freddy Martin and they had a Top 10 in 1949 with their rendition of the novelty song, "I've Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts," which sold 3 million copies. Other big hits include "The Morning Side Of The Mountain" (1951) and "Twenty-Three Starlets (And Me)" (1951), which both made the Pop Top 40. From 1962-1986, Griffin hosted his own talk show and also created several game shows, including "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel Of Fortune."
