ABOUT

The Pointer Sisters are a family R&B vocal group from Oakland, CA that rose to fame during the 1970s and 1980s. They began in 1969 as a duo of sisters Bonnie and June Pointer (November 30, 1953 - April 11, 2006) who went by the name, "Pointers, A Pair." Sister Anita Pointer joined them soon after, and in late 1972, sister Ruth Pointer came on board. In 1978, Bonnie went solo, and the group continued on as a trio through 2004 when June left the group and was eventually replaced by Ruth's daughter, Issa Pointer. Since 2009, The Pointer Sisters have consisted of four members: Anita, Ruth, Issa, and Ruth's granddaughter, Sadako Pointer. They perform most often as a trio with a rotating lineup.

Although famous for their many up-tempo R&B-infused dance hits, The Pointer Sisters have, over the years, also made their mark in such diverse genres as pop, rock, jazz, bebop, blues, soul, synthpop, and country. In 1973, they debuted on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts with the funk classic, "Yes We Can Can." Other early hits included "Fairytale" (1974), which won a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, "How Long (Betcha' Got A Chick On The Side)" (1975), which topped the R&B charts, and the Bruce Springsteen-penned "Fire" (1978). The Pointer Sisters reached the height of their commercial success in the 1980s with such hits as "He's So Shy" (1980), "Slow Hand" (1981), "I'm So Excited" (1984), "Automatic" (1984), "Jump (For My Love)" (1984), "Neutron Dance" (1984), and "Dare Me" (1985). They won two more Grammy Awards for "Jump (For My Love)" and "Automatic."

Besides a total of three Grammys, The Pointer Sisters' many other honors and accolades also include three American Music Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005.
