Rick James (February 1, 1948 - August 6, 2004, b. James Ambrose Johnson Jr.) was an R&B singer, songwriter, and producer with a great deal of crossover appeal combining elements of funk, soul, and rock who became famous during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Best known for the funky, uptempo "You And I" (1978), which topped the R&B charts and made the Top/Rock Top 20, other major hits include "Give It To Me Baby" (1981), "Super Freak" (1981), "Cold Blooded" (1983), and "17" (1984).
