Ritchie Valens (May 13, 1941 - February 3, 1959) was a highly influential and pioneering singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His best known songs include "La Bamba" (1958) adapted from a Mexican folk song. Valens was killed in the same plane crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson.
