Stan Getz

Stan Getz (February 2, 1927 - June 6, 1991, b. Stanley Gayetski) was a celebrated and influential jazz saxophonist known as "The Sound" because of his warm, lyrical tone. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman's big band, Getz performed in a number of bebop and cool jazz groups and is widely considered to be a pioneer of the latter genre. He helped popularize bossa nova in the U.S. with the sultry Top 5 smash, "The Girl From Ipanema" (1964, with Astrud Gilberto) and also had another big hit with the Grammy-winning "Desafinado" (1962, with Charlie Byrd).
