Syl Johnson (July 1, 1936 - February 6, 2022, b. Sylvester Thompson) was a blues and soul singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer who became famous during the late 1960s and 1970s. Best known for the soulful and gritty "Take Me To The River" (1975), an R&B Top 10 smash and his biggest Pop/Rock crossover success, other major hits include "Come On Sock It To Me" (1967), "Different Strokes" (1967), and "Is It Because I'm Black" (1969).
