William Kapell

William Kapell (September 20, 1922 - October 29, 1953, b. Oscar William Kapell) was a highly acclaimed virtuoso classical pianist who became famous beginning in the late 1930s. With his rendition of "The Eighteenth Variation (Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini)" (1953), which became a Top 20 Pop hit, he became one of a handful of classical musicians to cross over to popular music. He died in a plane crash at age 31 while returning from a concert tour in Australia.
