ABOUT
Blues Image was a rock band that became famous during the early 1970s. They are best known for the upbeat, era-defining 1970 smash, "Ride Captain Ride."
Formed in Tampa, Florida in 1966, members included Manuel "Manny" Bertematti (vocals, drums), Malcolm Jones (bass), Frank "Skip" Konte (keyboards), Mike Pinera (vocals, guitar), singer Denny Correll (February 19, 1946 - November 29, 2002), guitarist Kent Henry (April 5, 1948 - March 18, 2009), and singer/percussionist Joe Lala (November 3, 1947 - March 18, 2014). After relocating to Los Angeles, Blues Image signed with Atco Records and released their eponymous debut album in 1969.
Blues Image debuted in 1970 with the Pinera/Konte penned "Ride Captain Ride," which became a Top 5 hit on both the Canadian and U.S. Pop/Rock charts and soon after went gold. The band had one other charting song in late 1970 with "Gas Lamps And Clay," a minor hit.
After splitting in 1970, most Blues Image members went on to play with other rock bands. Frank Konte joined Three Dog Night, and Manuel Bertematti and Mike Pinera performed at various times with Iron Butterfly and other bands. Joe Lala became a highly sought-after session musician who worked with such top acts as Joe Walsh and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Kent Henry played lead guitar with Steppenwolf prior to the band's split in 1972.
