Bobby Bloom - Songs

Bobby Bloom (January 15, 1946 - February 28, 1974) was a pop/rock singer and songwriter with deep, soulful vocals who became famous during the early 1970s. He is best known for the upbeat, calypso-styled "Montego Bay" (1970).

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he became a member of a doo-wop group while still in high school and got his first major career break in 1969 when he was contracted to write a jingle for Pepsi Cola. He also worked as a songwriter for the Kama Sutra and Buddah labels and co-wrote such oldies classics as Tommy James & The Shondells' "Mony Mony" and The Archies' "Sunshine." His later songwriting credits include The Staple Singers' "Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na-Boom Boom)," which he co-wrote with longtime collaborator and producer, Jeff Barry.

Bobby Bloom debuted in 1967 on the Pop/Rock charts with the soulful pop ballad, "Love Don't Let Me Down." His fame took off in late 1970 with "Montego Bay," which became a Top 10 hit on the Pop/Rock charts and made the Adult Contemporary Top 20. Co-written by Bloom and Barry, this smash was followed by several minor hits that include "Where Are We Going" (1971), "Make Me Happy" (1971), and "We're All Goin' Home" (1971). Bloom's final charting song came in 1973 with "Sha La Boom Boom."

In the wake of his commercial fame, Bobby Bloom's life was tragically cut short in 1974 at age 28 by an accidental shooting believed to have resulted while he was cleaning his gun.
