ABOUT
Brenton Wood (b. July 26, 1941) is a highly acclaimed and veteran R&B/soul/pop singer-songwriter with an expressive falsetto and a flair for funk who became famous during the late 1960s. He is best known for two 1967 oldies classics: the upbeat yet soulful "Gimme Little Sign" and the loveably goofy and good-natured "The Oogum Boogum Song."
Born Alfred Jesse Smith in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in San Pedro, California, he taught himself to play the piano while in college and assumed the stage name, Brenton Wood. During the late 1950s, he began professionally as a songwriter for other performing artists while also working in an aluminum factory as a heavy equipment machine operator. He released his first singles on the Brent and Wand labels and by early 1967, had signed with Double Shot Records.
Brenton Wood debuted in the spring of 1967 with "The Oogum Boogum Song," a Top 40 Pop/Rock hit that made the R&B Top 20. He had his biggest hit later that year with "Gimme Little Sign" (1967), a Top 10 Pop/Rock smash that soon after went gold and also made the U.K. Top 10. Wood had another Top 40 Pop/Rock hit with "Baby You Got It" (1967) followed by several minor hits through the late 1960s that included "Lovey Dovey Kinda Lovin'" (1968), "Me And You" (1968), and "Some Got It, Some Don't" (1968). Other well known Brenton Wood songs include "I'm The One Who Knows" and "I Like The Way You Love Me." His final charting song came in 1977 with his dreamy disco remake of The Fleetwoods' "Come Softly To Me," which became a minor hit on both charts.
After his peak in commercial fame during the late 1960s, Wood continued to write songs for other artists and formed his own record label in 1972. Over the years, he has performed actively to the present day with a loyal following throughout the Southwest. His latest albums include "This Love Is For Real" (2001) and "Lord Hear My Prayer" (2009).
