Brewer And Shipley - Songs

ABOUT

Brewer & Shipley are a veteran folk rock duo consisting of singer-songwriters Mike Brewer (b. April 14, 1944) and Tom Shipley (b. April 1, 1941) who became famous during the early 1970s. They are best known for the then-controversial gospel-infused country rocker, "One Toke Over The Line" (1971), which was banned from a number of radio stations due to its references to marijuana.

Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley, who were both born and raised in the Midwest, began their careers separately in the mid 1960s on the Southern California coffeehouse circuit before coming together as a duo in 1968. They released their debut album that year on A&M Records, "Down In L.A.," the first in a long string that also includes their most popular recording, "Tarkio" (1970).

Brewer & Shipley debuted in early 1971 with "One Toke Over The Line," which became a Top 10 hit on the Pop/Rock charts despite its wide radio ban across many parts of the U.S. This smash, which also made the Canadian Top 5, was followed later that year by "Tarkio Road" (1971) and "Shake Off The Demon" (1972), both minor hits. Their final charting song came in later 1972 with "Yankee Lady."

After splitting in 1978, Brewer & Shipley reunited a number of times over the years before reforming as a duo in the mid 1990s on a more permanent basis. They have continued to tour and record actively to the present day mainly in the Midwest, both separately and as a duo.
