Gloria Lynne - Songs

ABOUT

Gloria Lynne (November 23, 1929 - October 15, 2013) was a highly acclaimed and veteran jazz singer who became famous during the mid 1960s. She is best known for "I Wish You Love" (1964), a French popular song originally recorded in 1942 by the French singer, Lucienne Boyer. The English version was introduced in 1957 by Keely Smith as the title song of her debut album and became one of her signature songs.

Born Gloria Wilson in Harlem, New York, she grew up singing gospel music in church. At 15, she won the first prize at a talent show at the famous Apollo Theater. During the 1950s, she recorded with the Enchanters and the Dell-Tones, and she also recorded solo under her birth name. Beginning in 1961, Lynne had a string of hits through 1965 on both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts that also includes "Impossible" (1961), "I Should Care" (1964), and "Be Anything (But Be Mine)" (1964). Other hits include "You Don't Have To Be A Tower Of Strength" (1961, an answer song to Gene McDaniels' "Tower Of Strength") and a sung version of "Watermelon Man" (1965), an instrumental jazz standard by Herbie Hancock for which Lynne wrote lyrics. A versatile singer, she also recorded a number of jazz, soul, pop and R&B albums, and she performed with such top acts as Ray Charles, Johnny Mathis, Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte, and Quincy Jones.

In 1995, New York City proclaimed July 25 as "Gloria Lynne Day." Her numerous other honors and accolades also included the International Women of Jazz Award (1996), a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation (1997), the National Treasure Award from the Seasoned Citizens Theatre Company (2003), induction into the National Black Sports and Entertainment Hall of Fame (2007), the Living Legend Award from the State of Pennsylvania (2007), and a special award for Outstanding Achievement In Jazz at the New York MAC Awards (2008). In 2010, Lynne was honored by Great Women In Music for her many contributions to the music industry.
