Joe Simon - Songs

ABOUT

Joe Simon is a highly acclaimed R&B/soul singer and songwriter with a great deal of crossover appeal who became famous during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Among his best known songs are "The Chokin' Kind," "Drowning In The Sea Of Love," "Power Of Love," and "Get Down, Get Down (Get On The Floor)," as well as several pop-country covers.

Simon made his debut on the Pop/Rock charts in 1964 with "My Adorable One," which became a minor hit. His hits through 1968 also included "Let's Do It Over" (1965), "No Sad Songs" (1968), and his soulful renditions of the country ballads, "Nine Pound Steel" (1967) and "(You Keep Me) Hangin' On" (1968), the latter of which is a completely different song from the same-titled 1966 hit by The Supremes. Simon's fame took off in 1969 with "The Chokin' Kind," an R&B cover of a country song first performed by Waylon Jennings that topped the R&B charts, reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and soon after became gold-certified. He topped the R&B charts again with "Power Of Love" (1972) and the danceable "Get Down, Get Down (Get On The Floor)" (1975), two songs he co-wrote that also made the Pop/Rock Top 20. Simon's long string of hits on both charts, which continued through the early 1980s, also included "Your Time To Cry" (1970), "Drowning In The Sea Of Love" (1971), "Pool Of Bad Luck" (1972), "Step By Step" (1973), and "Theme From Cleopatra Jones" (1973, with The Mainstreeters). "Drowning In The Sea Of Love" and "Power Of Love" became Simon's second and third gold records soon after their respective release years.

Joe Simon was awarded a Grammy in 1970 for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance of "The Chokin' Kind." His many other honors include being inducted in 1999 as a Pioneer Award honoree by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. Simon eventually retired from the music business to devote his life and warm baritone to the church and became a bishop. In the late 1990s, he released a gospel album, "This Story Must Be Told."
