John D. Loudermilk (March 31, 1934 - September 21, 2016) was a highly acclaimed and prolific songwriter who became famous beginning in the mid 1950s. As a recording artist, he had several hits during the 1950s-1960s on both the Country and Pop/Rock charts that include "Sittin' In The Balcony" (1957, credited to Johnny Dee), "Language Of Love" (1961), "Bad News" (1963), and "That Ain't All" (1965).
Born John D. Loudermilk, Jr. in Durham, North Carolina, he began playing the guitar as a boy and, as a teenager, wrote "A Rose And A Baby Ruth," which became a hit for George Hamilton IV in 1956. Other early songwriting successes include "Sittin' In The Balcony" which became a Top 10 hit for Eddie Cochran in 1957 as well as a Top 40 hit that same year for Loudermilk.
Over the years, Loudermilk wrote many more songs that became top hits for other artists that include "Indian Reservation (The Lament Of The Cherokee Reservation Indian)," which topped the charts in 1971 for Paul Revere & The Raiders, and "Tobacco Road," which became a Top 20 hit for The Nashville Teens in 1964. His many other songwriting milestones include "Ebony Eyes" (The Everly Brothers, 1961), "This Little Bird" (Marianne Faithfull, 1965), and "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," which became a Top 10 Pop/Rock hit for The Casinos in 1967 and topped the Country charts for Eddy Arnold the following year. He also co-wrote such country standards as "Abilene," which topped the Country charts in 1963 for George Hamilton IV.
Loudermilk was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1976 and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2011.
