ABOUT
Larry Finnegan (August 10, 1938 - July 22, 1973) was a pop singer and songwriter who became famous during the early 1960s. He is best known for the self-penned rockabilly-styled Dear John letter song, "Dear One" (1962), which he co-wrote with his older brother Vincent Finneran. This Del Shannon sound-alike smash became a U.S. Top 20 million-seller and topped the charts in Australia. Later singles, which failed to chart in the U.S., became big hits in Sweden where he amassed a large and loyal following.
Born John Lawrence Finneran in New York City, he began singing as a child and launched his career in music while a student at the University of Notre Dame when he had his biggest hit in early 1962. He moved to Sweden in 1966 where he formed his own record label and continued to have hits, many of them sung in Swedish. He also wrote hit songs for other artists in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. Finnegan later moved to Switzerland and in 1970 returned to the U.S. His life and career were tragically cut short at age 34 in 1973 when he died of a brain tumor.
