Slim Harpo - Songs

ABOUT

Slim Harpo (February 11, 1924 - January 31, 1970) was a highly acclaimed and influential blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player known for his Louisiana-flavored swamp blues style who became famous during the 1960s. He is best known for the smash instrumental, "Baby Scratch My Back" (1966), an R&B chart-topper and Pop/Rock Top 20 hit with bits of monologue that showcases his mastery of the harmonica. Other big hits include the soulful "Rainin' In My Heart" (1961), a Pop/Rock Top 40 hit.

Born either Isiah Moore or James Isaac Moore in Lobdell, Louisiana, he began in the 1950s performing in Baton Rouge bars as "Harmonica Slim," often accompanying brother-in-law Lightnin' Slim in live performances. Harpo launched his recording career in 1957 with the release of the bluesy and catchy "I'm A King Bee," a regional hit which, many years later, received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2008 and remains one of his best known songs. He toured and recorded actively up to his untimely death in 1970 at age 45 from a heart attack. A key figure in the swamp blues genre, the Slim Harpo Music Awards are held annually in Baton Rouge in his honor.
