Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942 - September 18, 1970) was a pioneering and influential rock electric guitarist, singer, and songwriter who revolutionized his instrument with such innovative techniques as the use of feedback, string bending, and the wah-wah pedal. He is famous internationally for such self-penned classics as "Purple Haze" (1967), "The Wind Cries Mary" (1967), and "Foxey Lady" (1967), as well as his covers of the hard rock standard, "Hey Joe" (1967), and the Bob Dylan-penned "All Along The Watchtower" (1968).

Born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington, he began playing the guitar at age 15 and in his early career years, backed such top acts as The Isley Brothers and Little Richard. In 1966, he moved to London where he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience, achieving immediate success on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean with such hits as "Hey Joe," "Purple Haze," and "The Wind Cries Mary." His most memorable performances include his set at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, which catapulted him to stardom, and his iconic rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock in 1969.

Despite his career and life being cut short in 1970 at age 27, Jimi Hendrix's influence on rock music remains profound, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in rock music history. He was honored with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career and posthumously that include multiple Grammys and being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 as a part of The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
