ABOUT
The Angels are a veteran girl group-styled vocal ensemble that became famous during the early 1960s. They are best known for the oldies classic, "My Boyfriend's Back" (1963).
Formed in 1958 in New Jersey and first known as The Starlets (not to be confused with the same-named group of "Better Tell Him No" fame), the original lineup consisted of sisters Barbara and Phyllis "Jiggs" Allbut, Lynda Malzone, and Bernadette Carroll (June 21, 1944 - October 5, 2018). After Malzone left the group, Linda Jansen (July 7, 1944 - February 19, 2019) became the new lead singer, and Carroll soon after went solo. By 1961, the remaining trio had become known as The Angels and were signed with the Caprice label. Jansen left in late 1962 to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Peggy Santiglia. The Angels moved to Smash Records, a subsidiary of Mercury, and began working with the songwriting/production team of Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein, and Richard Gottehrer who penned "My Boyfriend's Back" and other hits.
The Angels debuted in late 1961 on the Pop/Rock charts with their soaring cover of the Charles Danvers/Carl Sigman-penned traditional pop standard, "'Til," which became a Top 20 hit. They had a Top 40 hit in 1962 with "Cry Baby Cry" before their fame took off the following year with "My Boyfriend's Back" (1963), which topped the Pop/Rock charts, became a Top 5 R&B hit, and soon after went gold. The Angels' many other hits include "I Adore Him" (1963), "Thank You And Goodnight" (1963), and "Wow Wow Wee (He's The Boy For Me)" (1964). Their final charting song came in 1968 with "The Boy With The Green Eyes."
After their peak in commercial fame, The Angels continued performing and recording over the years with a number of personnel changes. The current lineup is a trio consisting of original members Barbara and Phyllis Allbut and Peggy Santiglia. The group was inducted in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005. Billboard included "My Boyfriend's Back" in its list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.
