ABOUT
Engelbert Humperdinck (b. 1936) is a highly acclaimed and veteran English traditional pop singer with a smooth, rich baritone and a flair for romantic ballads who became famous internationally beginning in the late 1960s. Best known for his smash rendition of the Eddie Miller/Robert Yount-penned pop standard, "Release Me (And Let Me Love Again)" (1967), which topped the U.K. charts, made the U.S. Top 5, and became a million-seller, his many other signature songs include such easy listening classics as "The Last Waltz" (1967), "Am I That Easy To Forget" (1967), "A Man Without Love (Quando M'innamoro)" (1968), "Winter World Of Love" (1969), and "After The Lovin'" (1976).
Born Arnold George Dorsey in Madras, British India (now Chennai, India), he moved with his family to Leicester, England when he was ten. He began performing and recording in the late 1950s under the name, Gerry Dorsey, and his career began to take off in the mid 1960s when he partnered with manager Gordon Mills who advised him to change his stage name to that of the well known 19th-century German opera composer, Engelbert Humperdinck. The handsome balladeer has continued to perform and record actively to the present day, and over his long career, he has amassed a large and devoted following, with many of his more die-hard female fans calling themselves "Humperdinckers." A top selling artist with over 140 million records sold worldwide, Humperdinck's numerous honors and accolades include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Golden Globe Award, and being appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2021 for services to music.
