Don Gibson (April 3, 1928 - November 17, 2003) was a highly acclaimed and veteran country song-songwriter and guitarist with a great deal of crossover appeal who became famous beginning in the late 1950s. He is best known for the up-tempo "Oh Lonesome Me" (1958), which topped the Country charts and made the Pop/Rock Top 10. A prolific songwriter, Gibson also penned such country standards as "Sweet Dreams" as made famous by Patsy Cline and "I Can't Stop Loving You" as recorded by Ray Charles and over 700 other artists.

Born Donald Eugene Gibson in Shelby, North Carolina, he made his first recordings for Mercury in 1949 with his band, Sons Of The Soil. He debuted on the Country charts in 1956 with his version of "Sweet Dreams," and his long string of hits, which continued through 1980, also includes such classics as "Blue Blue Day" (1958), "Just One Time" (1960), "Sea Of Heartbreak" (1961), "Lonesome Number One" (1961), "I Can Mend Your Broken Heart" (1962), and "Woman (Sensuous Woman)" (1972). He also recorded several hit duets with Dottie West and Sue Thompson.

Gibson's numerous honors and accolades over the years include being inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1973), the Country Music Hall of Fame (2001), and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame (2010).
