ABOUT
The Fireballs (a.k.a. Jimmy Gilmer & The Fireballs) were a rock & roll band from Raton, New Mexico that became famous during the early 1960s. Best known for the laid-back, feel-good smash, "Sugar Shack" (1963), which topped both the R&B and Pop/Rock charts, other hits include "Daisy Petal Pickin'" (1963) and "Bottle Of Wine" (1967) as well as such early instrumentals as "Torquay" (1959), "Bulldog" (1960), and "Quite A Party" (1961).
Formed in 1957, the original lineup consisted of lead guitarist George Tomsco, singer Chuck Tharp (February 3, 1941 - March 17, 2006), bassist Stan Lark (July 27, 1940 - August 4, 2021), drummer Eric Budd (October 23, 1938 - October 7, 2022), and rhythm guitarist Dan Trammell, with some personnel changes. The Fireballs took their name from the Jerry Lee Lewis oldies classic, "Great Balls Of Fire." They began as a largely instrumental act before Tharp left in 1960 and was replaced by Jimmy Gilmer (September 15, 1940 - September 7, 2024), who took over as lead singer. The group disbanded in 1969, reformed in 1989 for the Clovis Music Festival in New Mexico, then continued on with original members George Tomsco, Stan Lark, and Chuck Tharp until 2006. Gilmer returned as lead vocalist the following year, and The Fireballs gave their final performance in 2022.
