ABOUT
The Fendermen were a rockabilly duo consisting of Phil Humphrey (November 26, 1937 - March 29, 2016) and Jim Sundquist (November 26, 1937 - June 4, 2013) who became famous during the early 1960s. They are best known for their hilarious, raucous rockabilly remake of the Jimmie Rodgers-penned country classic, "Mule Skinner Blues" (1960). This wild and woolly Top 5 smash also became a big hit in Canada and the U.K. and earned Humphrey and Sundquist an appearance on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand."
Humphrey and Sundquist, who both happened to have been born on the same day, met as students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the late 1950s and formed a duo in 1959 named after the famous Fender guitar that they both played. Humphrey served as the act's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, with Sundquist as lead guitarist. By 1963, they had disbanded, and Sundquist later formed Jim Sundquist & His Fendermen in 1980, performing actively for many years.
