Gene McDaniels (February 12, 1935 - July 29, 2011) was an R&B/soul/jazz singer, songwriter, and producer with clear, soulful vocals who became famous during the early 1960s. He is best known for the uplifting "A Hundred Pounds Of Clay" (1961), which became a million-seller and went gold. Other top hits include "A Tear" (1961), "Tower Of Strength" (1961), "Chip Chip" (1962), "Point Of No Return" (1962), and "Spanish Lace" (1962).
Born Eugene Booker McDaniels in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, he sang gospel music at an early age, learned to play the saxophone and trumpet, formed his first band in his teens, and studied at the University of Omaha Conservatory of Music. Beginning in the early 1970s, he recorded as Eugene McDaniels and (for the 1972 song, "River") as Universal Jones. Over the years, he recorded several albums and wrote and produced for other artists through the 2000s. His many songwriting highlights include "Feel Like Makin' Love" made famous by Roberta Flack. McDaniels also appeared in several films that included "Ring-A-Ding Rhythm" (1962), "The Young Swingers" (1963), and "Uptown Saturday Night" (1974).
