Graham Central Station - Songs

ABOUT

Graham Central Station was a highly acclaimed funk/progressive soul band with a great deal of crossover appeal that became famous during the mid 1970s. Best known for "Your Love" (1975), which topped the R&B charts and made the Pop/Rock Top 40, other hits include "Can You Handle It?" (1974), "Feel The Need" (1974), "It's Alright" (1975), and "The Jam" (1976).

Formed in 1973 in Oakland, California and named after the band's founder and frontman, Larry Graham Jr. (vocals, bass, guitar, clavinet, organ, piano, drums, percussion), the lineup also included Patryce "Chocolate" Banks (vocals, electric funk box, tambourine), Hershall Kennedy (vocals, clavinet, trumpet), Robert "Butch" Sam (vocals, piano, organ), Willie Sparks (vocals, drums), and David Vega (vocals, guitar), with numerous other musicians serving at various times. After disbanding in 1979, Graham Central Station reunited several times over the years and in 2011, opened for Prince on his "Welcome 2 America" tour.

Larry Graham Jr. (b. 1946) went solo in 1980 and topped the R&B charts that year with "One In A Million You," which also made the Pop/Rock Top 10. He is credited with the invention of the slapping technique on the electric bass, which imparts a distinctive percussive element to the instrument. Prior to forming Graham Central Station, he first became famous as the bassist for Sly & The Family Stone, also serving as a background singer. He was later inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 along with other members of that group.
