ABOUT
The Grateful Dead were a highly acclaimed and influential rock band with a long and loyal following (known as "Deadheads") that became famous beginning in the mid 1960s when they became one of the main musical embodiments of the then-emerging counterculture scene in the U.S. With a unique, eclectic sound incorporating elements of rock, psychedelia, folk, blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, rock & roll, gospel, reggae, and world music, they were renowned for their live performances which often featured extended, mesmerizing jams. Their many hits include "Uncle John's Band" (1970), "Truckin'" (1971), "The Music Never Stopped" (1975), and "Touch Of Grey" (1987).
Formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California and first known as the Warlocks, the original lineup consisted of Jerry Garcia (lead guitar, vocals), Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, vocals), Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (keyboards, harmonica, vocals), Phil Lesh (bass guitar, vocals), and Bill Kreutzmann (drums), with a number of personnel additions and changes over the years. Already a major local sensation, The Grateful Dead signed with Warner Brothers in 1966 and released their eponymous debut album the following year. By the end of 1995, the Grateful Dead had dissolved officially after the passing of Jerry Garcia (August 1, 1942 - August 9, 1995). Former members toured as The Other Ones and The Dead up through 2009, and in 2015, the four surviving original Grateful Dead members marked the band's 50th anniversary in a series of shows taking place in Chicago and Santa Clara, California billed as their final performances.
The Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and their numerous other honors and accolades include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2007) and being named as a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors (2024). A recording of their May 8, 1977 concert at Cornell University was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2012.
