ABOUT
The Hondells were a surf rock studio group the became famous during the mid 1960s. They are best known for their Top 10 hit cover of The Beach Boys' "Little Honda" (1964). Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, this song was inspired by the popularity of Honda motorcycles in Southern California at that time.
The Hondells were formed in 1964 in Los Angeles, California by producer Gary Usher, who was tasked with assembling a group of session musicians to record an album of Honda-themed songs for Mercury Records. The instrumental lineup included such big names as Glen Campbell, Al DeLory, Tommy Tedesco, and Richie Podolor, most of who were, at that time, part of The Wrecking Crew, a loose collective of top-notch LA-area session musicians who backed many recordings from the 1960s and 1970s. Vocals for "Little Honda" were provided by Chuck Girard, formerly of The Castells. Although primarily a studio group, The Hondells also toured (with a different lineup). They recorded two albums and several singles before disbanding in 1970.
