ABOUT
The Honey Cone is a highly acclaimed and veteran female R&B/soul group with a great deal of crossover appeal that became famous during the early 1970s. They are best known for the sassy and defiant "Want Ads" (1971), which topped both the Pop/Rock and R&B charts and became a million-seller.
Formed in 1968 in Los Angeles, the original lineup consisted of lead singer Edna Wright (February 2, 1945 - September 12, 2020) with Carolyn Willis and Shelly Clark. They first appeared together in 1968 on an Andy Williams TV special and were discovered by Eddie Holland, who signed the trio to Hot Wax Records and named the group after a favorite ice cream flavor. They debuted in mid 1968 on both the Pop/Rock and R&B charts with "While You're Out Looking For Sugar?" and their fame took off in 1971 with what would become their signature song, "Want Ads." They topped the R&B charts again later that year with the cute and funny "Stick-Up" (1971), another million-seller and a Pop/Rock 20 smash, and their many hits through 1972 also include "Girls It Ain't Easy" (1969), "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show Part I" (1971), and "The Day I Found Myself" (1972).
The Honey Cone split in 1973, with a number of reunions over the years. As of 2023, they have continued to tour and perform actively to the present day, with a lineup that includes one original member, Shelly Clark. Their many honors include the National Rhythm & Blues Music Society Unsung Heroine Award (2016) and being inducted into the Soul Music Hall Of Fame (2020).
